Red Cake


1/2 cup shortening
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon vinegar
1 cup buttermilk
2 and 1/4 cups cake flour
1 and 1/2 cups sugar
1/4 cup red food coloring
2 teaspoons cocoa

Red Cake Frosting:
2 tablespoons flour
1 cup milk
1 cup butter or margarine
1 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla


For Cake: Cream the shortening and sugar, add eggs. Make a paste of the cocoa and food coloring. Add this to the first mixture. Then add flour, alternately with; buttermilk and salt. Add vanilla. Lastly, mix the baking soda and vinegar and add while it is bubbling. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes

For Frosting: Cook flour and milk until thick. Cool. Cream the sugar, butter and vanilla until fluffy. Blend into cooled flour and milk. Mix and frost cake.
